To my 10-year-old self

I saw this on SoulPancake, and just started writing.

Hey you.

I know it’s a weird time right now, and I know you feel unsettled. That’s scary. I know you’re hurt, and I know that no one else knows. Don’t try to go it alone. It’s too hard. It’s too hard to tear down the walls you will work so hard to build. Yes, you hurt. No, it wasn’t your fault. No, it’s not fair. But power through it. Be hurt, but don’t let it define you.

Don’t worry about what EVERYone thinks. Worry only what those important ones think. Figure out who the important ones are to YOU, not who others think should be.

Don’t spend so much time and energy being mad at the world. DO spend time figuring out how to make your world better. For yourself, and for those around you.

Don’t be a jerk. No matter how mad or grumpy you are, it’s never OK to be mean to other people.

Don’t worry when things get (and stay) hard. That’s not how the story ends. I promise.

Practice the piano. EVERY DAY. And don’t quit taking lessons. You will have a good thing in Mrs. Brenda, don’t let it slip away.
Sing in the choir.
Keep your eye on the ball and when the pitch is right, swing for the fence.
When you run for Student Council in 6th grade, vote for yourself. It’s totally OK to do that.
You’re not as dumb as you think you are in math. Don’t let it overwhelm you.
Try harder in Mrs. Hanks’ English class. Ya know, like do your homework, and do it well. Because you can.
Say “Thank you” and say it often.
Get outside and play. You won’t always have the opportunity. People look at you funny, now. . .but you don’t care, you’re having fun.

You are not invincible. And you don’t have to be. Ask for help when you need it. Your pride is not worth the struggle.

Start forgiving now, even if you don’t know how. Just try.

You are enough. Ignore the voices who nitpick, listen to the ones who build you up.

Most importantly, DO NOT BE AFRAID. Fear will hold you back from so many good things.

Be you.
Be brave.
Don’t quit.

XO,
Me
